andrew brownAlthough aimed mostly at beginners and those with an intermediate knowledge of photography, anybody interested in using the beauty, variety and inspiration found at the retreat centre to improve their photography, is welcome. The basic technical aspects will be briefly taught and explained, and retreatants will use this knowledge, along with a Zen type of mindfulness and awareness to endeavor to remove some of their “suffering” and improve the way they look at photography. The emphasis will be on fun and looking at the art of photography with a different mindset. Please bring a camera, a tripod, flash units, spare batteries and a sense of humour.

Andrew Brown received his first camera at eight years old and has retained his love for photography since then. He thinks of himself primarily as a travel photographer, which effectively covers many genres: food, architecture, street, portraiture, landscapes and wildlife. He occasionally writes too and has had articles published in Food and Home Entertaining magazine. A regular visitor to the BRC, he tries to apply Zen and Buddhist philosophy to his photography and believes in getting the picture right the first time. He also leads groups of unsuspecting photographers into the markets in Durban, hoping to show them how the other side lives.

William (Shogan) has been practising meditation for nearly 20 years, cultivating stillness and inquiry. He took precepts with Dae Chong, Osho at Poplar Grove and now leads morning and evening zazen at the BRC, weaving verses from the Dhammapada into meditation for reflection and insight. With a keen interest in how the Dharma might evolve in an AI-driven, multiplanetary future, William embraces both tradition and possibility. He also guides qigong in the mornings and offers tai chi in the afternoons, integrating movement into mindfulness. His practice is an invitation - to sit, to move, and to explore the ever-expanding nature of awareness.
