julian kiepielterry colemanYou don’t have to be an artist to be able to sketch what is in front of you. Everyone can see that some things are shorter than others or to the left or right of something else. So you simply draw it like that. You don’t have to be - or become - an artist to do that. All you need is one eye and two fingers. Participants will be taken through a series of practice sessions in this type of “Seeing-Drawing” after which they will draw a variety of subjects, from still life through to landscape scenes and portraits - all in the space of two days. Sketching is one of the loveliest skills anybody can acquire. You can take your pen and sketchbook anywhere and experience what it is like to be truly present in where you are. All materials will be provided.

Julian Kiepiel has had a career in urban and regional  planning and has a PhD in peace studies. He completed several of Louis van Loon’s drawing classes since 2006. That initial retreat awakened a deep shift in his attitude to drawing, supported by Louis’ broad and clear toolkit. This retreat shares Louis’ gift, providing a taste of his approach to drawing.

Terry Coleman’s experience spans over 47 years of commercial art from hand-drawn illustrations in the pre-computer days to community projects today. For him, making art is a form of meditation. We see, we feel, we react. No pressure, no perfection. Just you, your tools, and the joy of creating in the moment. Accessible to all levels of experience.
