Building Better Relationships: Me, You And UsMost people spend years trying to improve their relationships, without ever being shown how relationships actually work. Over the years, my work has taken me into boardrooms and living rooms alike, and one truth continues to reveal itself: the quality of our lives is shaped by the quality of our relationships - especially the one we have with ourselves. And yet, relationships are often the place where we experience the most confusion, the most longing and at times, the most pain. My sense is that we believe the myth that we ‘fall in love ’- when a more accurate description is: “Love is not a feeling to fall into. It is a daily practice of showing up with care, intention, and integrity.” What I have come to understand is that relationships are something we are constantly building. Over our retreat from 17-19 April, Sav Goldridge and I will explore what I call The Architecture of Relationship – a practical and deeply human framework which looks at three essential territories: Me, You, and the Us we create together. Sav, my co-teacher and Enneagram practitioner believes that “Connection isn’t just about love - it’s about awareness.” Each of us brings a way of being into relationship, shaped by our history, our protections and our longings. The Enneagram helps make these patterns visible, so what once felt automatic can become conscious. From this place, we move from reacting by habit to relating with intention and this is where real change begins. We will move beyond surface-level conversations and into the real work of relationship understanding compatibility and what truly matters to you; expanding your capacity for intimacy across emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual connection; recognising your patterns and how they show up when you are under pressure and learning how to consciously build a partnership that is not left to chance. Whether you participate on your own or with a partner, this is an opportunity to step back and redesign how you relate to yourself, to others and to the life you are creating. If you are ready to stop repeating patterns and start building relationships with intention, this retreat is for you. Warmly, Shelley Lewin |

An Appeal For HelpOver February and March, the BRC experienced serious challenges with a series of severe lightning strikes causing extensive damage across the property. Trees were split, borehole motors and pumps were destroyed, and other essential infrastructure required urgent repair. Heartfelt thanks to those who have already responded generously - your help has made an immediate difference. Yet, the unexpected costs of replacing equipment, purchasing generators and hiring contractors to fell the damaged trees have left the Centre under financial strain. For more than forty-six years the BRC has been sustained by the kindness of its Sangha. Time and again your support has enabled the Centre to continue serving people from many walks of life. Now we ask for your help once again. If you are able, please consider contributing to help cover the repairs and keep the Centre running while we restore the grounds and infrastructure. Every gift - large or small - will help. With Metta, |

About the BRCPerched on a ridge at the head of a valley in the Umkomaas river system in KwaZulu-Natal, the Buddhist Retreat Centre looks out on a vista of indigenous valleys, forests and rolling hills receding like waves in the blue distance. Here, for forty-six years, people of all religions and none have come to experience peace and tranquillity. It is a gentle, sympathetic space where one can be still and get in touch with oneself and reflect on the things that crowd one's life. The BRC was voted by CNN as one of the ten best meditation centres in the world. The BRC was awarded Natural Heritage status in 1995 under the auspices of the Department of Environmental Affairs and received a certificate to that effect signed by President Nelson Mandela for turning an eroded farm into the natural paradise it has become - thousands of indigenous trees were planted by retreatants under the supervision of Mervyn Croft - with 160 species of birds, including the Blue Swallow, otter, deer, antbear and indigenous forests. The Centre was also given the special status of “Custodian of the Blue Swallow” for its work in preserving the breeding areas of this endangered bird and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife proclaimed part of the estate as “Nirodha Private Nature Reserve” for the conservation of the rare Blue Swallow and Mistbelt Grassland. The BRC facilitated the founding of Woza Moya, the community-based NGO, located in Ufafa Valley, twenty - six years ago, on the estate. Their vision is for all people in the community to be healthy and productive, to live in a safe and clean environment, with good access to services and social justice. The Centre continues to support the organisation by showcasing their crafts in the shop and sponsoring their trainers and consultants. We have been deeply touched by the many generous gifts received in the form of linen and towels, furniture, indigenous trees, a Kenwood mixer and food processor, vacuum cleaners and Buddha statues. How you can help to keep the Dharma wheels turning at the BRC and to continue its legacy for the future: Become a Spiritual friend by:
The continued existence of the Centre as a sanctuary for healing is dependent on the goodwill and support of our Sangha. Chrisi Visit our website for further information, directions, image gallery etc. |
